If you’re planning a trip to Kanchanaburi, finding the right place to stay can make a huge difference to your experience. With so many riverside resorts and guesthouses to choose from, it can be tricky deciding where to base yourself—especially if you want something comfortable, convenient, and affordable.

On our recent weekend trip from Bangkok, we chose Kanchanaburi City Hotel, a small but well-located hotel just a short walk from the iconic Bridge Over the River Kwai. It turned out to be a fantastic base for exploring the town and nearby attractions.

In this Kanchanaburi City Hotel review, I’ll share everything you need to know about staying here—from the location and rooms to the pool, breakfast, and overall value for money. If you’re planning a short break or weekend trip to Kanchanaburi, this guide will help you decide whether this hotel is right for you.

Kanchanaburi City Hotel Review

Kanchanaburi City Hotel is a mid-range hotel located in the Thamakham area of Kanchanaburi, just a couple of minutes’ walk from one of the town’s most famous landmarks—the Bridge Over the River Kwai. The hotel sits on Maenam Kwai Road, a lively stretch filled with restaurants, cafes, massage shops, and small bars.

The property is particularly popular with travellers who want easy access to the River Kwai Bridge and the nearby railway station, which is used by trains running along the historic Death Railway; one of the most fascinating things to do in Kanchanaburi. In fact, the hotel is located only about 200 metres from the bridge and Saphan Kwae Yai Railway Station, making it incredibly convenient for sightseeing.

Unlike many of the floating hotels and jungle resorts you’ll find deeper in the province, Kanchanaburi City Hotel offers a simple city-style stay. Think clean, modern rooms, helpful staff, and practical amenities like a swimming pool, restaurant, and free bike rental.

For travellers who want a comfortable and affordable base without sacrificing location, it’s a solid option.

Location of Kanchanaburi City Hotel

Location

One of the biggest reasons we chose Kanchanaburi City Hotel was the location.

The hotel sits just a short stroll from the Bridge Over the River Kwai, one of Thailand’s most famous historical landmarks. You can walk there in about two or three minutes, which means you can easily visit the bridge early in the morning before the tour buses arrive or in the evening when it’s beautifully lit up.

Being this close to the bridge also means you’re within walking distance of plenty of restaurants, bars, and cafes. The area around the bridge has become one of the most popular tourist areas in Kanchanaburi, so you’ll find everything from Thai street food to international restaurants nearby.

If you’re arriving by train, the location is even more convenient. Saphan Kwae Yai railway station, the station closest to the bridge, is only a few minutes away on foot. From here you can take the scenic train ride along the Death Railway toward Tham Krasae, which is one of the best things to do in the area.

Other nearby attractions include:

The hotel is also within a short drive of the town centre, night markets, and shopping areas like Big C.

For a short stay in Kanchanaburi, the location really couldn’t be much better.

First Impressions and Check-In

Arriving at Kanchanaburi City Hotel, the first thing you’ll notice is that it feels welcoming and relaxed rather than overly fancy. The building is modern and well maintained, with a small parking area at the front and a bright lobby inside.

Check-in was quick and straightforward. The hotel has a 24-hour reception desk, which is helpful if you arrive late in the evening or early in the morning.

The staff were friendly and efficient, quickly checking us in and explaining the key details of our stay. They also offered advice about local attractions and transport options, which is particularly helpful if it’s your first time visiting Kanchanaburi.

One thing that stood out throughout our stay was the service. While this isn’t a luxury resort, the staff are genuinely welcoming and helpful. Many guest reviews mention the friendliness of the team, which really adds to the overall experience.

After receiving our key cards, we headed up to our room to settle in.

Kanchanaburi City Hotel rooms

The Rooms

Kanchanaburi City Hotel offers several different room types designed for couples, families, and small groups.

Room options include:

  • Superior Double Room
  • Superior Twin Room
  • Japanese-Style Twin Room
  • Japanese Triple Room
  • Junior Suite
  • Family Junior Suite

We stayed in a Superior Double Room, which was spacious, comfortable, and perfect for a short weekend stay.

Room Design and Layout

The room had a clean, modern design with neutral colours and simple furnishings. While it isn’t particularly luxurious, everything felt fresh and well maintained.

Inside the room you’ll typically find a comfortable double or twin bed, air conditioning, fridge, desk with seating area, free bottled water and free WiFi.

The room size was larger than we expected, with plenty of space to move around. There was also a small seating area, which made the room feel more relaxed rather than cramped.

The bed itself was comfortable, and we slept well during both our stays.

The Swimming Pool

One of the highlights of Kanchanaburi City Hotel is the outdoor swimming pool. After a day of exploring temples, museums, and waterfalls around Kanchanaburi, having a pool to relax in is a huge bonus.

The pool area is located on the ground floor and is surrounded by loungers and umbrellas. It’s not a huge pool, but it’s more than big enough for a refreshing swim.

We spent some time here in the late afternoon, and it was surprisingly peaceful. Many guests are out exploring the area during the day, so the pool rarely feels crowded, in fact, we were the only ones using the pool during our visit.

breakfast at Kanchanaburi City Hotel

Breakfast and Dining

Breakfast is served at the hotel’s restaurant each morning, offering a simple but satisfying start to the day.

Guests can expect a mix of Asian and Western breakfast options, including cooked dishes, toast, fruit, and coffee.

The way their breakfast set up works, is there is a buffet section of fruit juices, coffee, toast and cereal. But you also choose items from a menu to be cooked and prepared to your table.

For other options however, we recommend having breakfast, brunch or lunch at Cinnamon Coffee; a comfortable, chic cafe not too far away.

For dinner options, there are plenty of best restaurants in Kanchanaburi to choose from, with places like Keeree Tara Restaurant located within a few minutes walk from the hotel and a great spot for dinner.

Hotel Facilities

Although Kanchanaburi City Hotel is a relatively small property, it still offers a good range of facilities for guests.

Some of the main amenities include an outdoor swimming pool, free WiFi throughout the hotel, 24-hour reception, free parking, on-site restaurant and café, laundry services and bicycle rentals.

The free bicycle rental is a particularly nice touch. Kanchanaburi is a fairly flat town, making it easy to cycle between attractions like the bridge, museums, and riverside restaurants.

Things to Do Nearby

One of the biggest advantages of staying at Kanchanaburi City Hotel is how close it is to many of the town’s top attractions.

  • Bridge Over the River Kwai: The most famous landmark in Kanchanaburi is just a short walk away. Built during World War II as part of the Death Railway, the bridge has become one of Thailand’s most important historical sites. Walking across it is a must-do experience when visiting the area.
  • Death Railway Train Ride: From the nearby Saphan Kwae Yai station, you can take the train along part of the historic railway route. This journey passes beautiful scenery along the River Kwai and is one of the most memorable experiences in Kanchanaburi.
  • JEATH War Museum: Located nearby, this museum tells the story of prisoners of war who were forced to build the railway during World War II. It’s a moving and educational experience that helps visitors understand the region’s history.
  • Erawan Waterfalls: Although about an hour’s drive away, Erawan National Park is one of the most popular day trips from Kanchanaburi. The park is famous for its stunning seven-tier waterfall and turquoise swimming pools.

Service and Staff

Of course, I can’t discuss the Kanchanaburi City Hotel review without looking at the service and staff. After a few visits to the hotel now, the receptionist staff are always welcoming and helpful. Though they may not be big talkers, they are always happy to help.

There always seems to be cleaners around keeping the place tidy and spotless, and a guard is located outside of the hotel during the evenings.

Who Is This Hotel Best For?

Kanchanaburi City Hotel is a great choice for several types of travellers.

It’s particularly good for:

  • First-time visitors to Kanchanaburi
The location makes it easy to explore the main sights without needing a car.
  • Weekend travellers from Bangkok
The convenient location near the bridge and train station makes it perfect for short trips.
  • Budget-conscious travellers
The hotel offers excellent value for money compared to many riverside resorts.
  • Families
With family rooms and a swimming pool, it’s suitable for those travelling with children.

However, if you’re looking for a luxury riverside resort or a floating hotel experience, you may prefer one of the more remote resorts outside the town.

Our various stays at Kanchanaburi City Hotel have always been comfortable, convenient, and great value for money. The unbeatable location near the Bridge Over the River Kwai makes it one of the best places to stay in town if you want easy access to Kanchanaburi’s top attractions.

If you’re planning a trip to Kanchanaburi and want a reliable base close to the action, this hotel is definitely worth considering.
