If you’re planning a visit to Kanchanaburi to see the iconic River Kwai Bridge; one of the best things to do in Kanchanaburi, then make sure to check out this nearby gem. Goodway Restaurant is a riverside Thai eatery that’s as much about the view as it is about the food and ambience.

As expats living in Thailand, we have travelled from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi a few times now and each time, we visit Goodway Restaurant. It is a casual, charming restaurant with delicious food and a great view; what more could we ask for!

Goodway Restaurant Review

Goodway Restaurant Setting

The Setting

The setting is the initial draw for the Goodway restaurant. the family-style wooden tables arranged facing the river, with views that stretch across to the historic steel spans of the River Kwai Bridge is impressive and caroming.

The restaurant has an open-air charm and laid-back, making this a very chill place to enjoy a long lunch, afternoon beer, or sunset dinner.

The outdoor seating is where most people prefer to linger; you’re here for that river view, after all but depending on the heat and humidity (which can get intense mid-day in Kanchanaburi), you might find yourself craving a shady table or even a cosy spot with a cushion.

Ask for cushions if you need them — the wooden chairs are solid but can be hard on your back after a while.

Food at Goodway Restaurant

The Food at Goodway Restaurant

Now, let’s talk about the food because at the end of the day, this is the most important part that makes or breaks a restaurant.

Goodway Restaurant leans firmly into Thai cuisine with a family-friendly, casual twist. Most guests order the menu classics — things like fried chicken with cashew nuts, fresh seafood served in coconut, Tom Yum, whole fried fish, and crisp salads.

We have been twice now and loved the Thai Green Curry (order it with Roti), the soft-shell crab with curry powder (incredible flavors) and the chicken wrapped in pandan leaves (a go to whenever we see it on a menu). There are plenty of fish dishes with all sorts of flavors and toppings to choose from too,

Drinks

Perfect for hot weather or sunset watching, Goodway also serves a selection of drinks — from ice-cold LEO beers and soft drinks to refreshing juices. We enjoyed a beer whilst watching the sunset over the bridge but they also have bottled cola which is rare in Thailand but perfectly refreshing.

If you’re in Kanchanaburi for golden hour (roughly 5–7 PM), the light over the river becomes mesmerizing — and watching the sun dip behind the bridge with a drink in hand is genuinely one of those moments that travel stories are made of.

Location of Goodway Restaurant

Service

As with most restaurants in Thailand, the servers are friendly and helpful, often smiling and welcoming you to sit. However, this is a very busy restaurant at times, so we have found service to be a little slower than others, especially in the evenings near closing.

The Price

The price is also exceptional considering where you are. You are sat in a unique restaurant in Thailand, with a view of one of the most iconic bridges in the country, a place that represents a wealth of history. Plus, you have a huge selection of local dishes to choose from; the price is incredibly reasonable.

No, it isn’t as cheap as the street vendors that congregate near the end of the bridge in the evenings but for the ambience, taste and experience, the price is fantastic.

For an example, on our recent visit, my husband and I shared a Thai green curry, Pad kra pow, soft shell crab with curry powder, a small rice, 1 lao beer and 4 Coca Cola bottles (I was really thirsty after a Port FC away game); and the cost came to 1030B.

Practical Notes — What to Expect

Here are a few little things to keep in mind before you go:

  • Sun and heat: Outdoor seats are lovely, but midday can be hot. Try to visit in the evening for the best atmosphere and temperature,
  • Flies by the river: Although not as many as you’d think, you are going to see mosquitoes in the area; you are sat floating atop a river after all. Pop to the 7-11 nearby (literally found on the other side of the bridge approximately 3 mins away) and get yourself the pink capped mosquito spray to keep yourself from being bitten alive.
  • Seating comfort: As mentioned earlier, bring your own comfort mindset — or request cushions for the wooden chairs. There are also fans placed around the restaurant, so sit yourself near one if you want a cooler experience.
  • Photography: This place excels at photo ops — whether it’s the bridge, the river, or your food with light reflecting off the water. Take plenty of pictures and aim to visit for sunset for those perfect shots

So… Should You Go?

If you’re a traveller who loves atmospheric dining spots with views that make time slow down, Goodway Restaurant is absolutely worth putting on your Kanchanaburi list — especially if you’re visiting the River Kwai Bridge nearby. The combination of river views, casual Thai food, friendly service, and a relaxed, almost timeless vibe makes this place feel like a small highlight woven into a larger journey

Yes, the food can vary in reviews, and some dishes are rather average — but when you’re sitting with that unparalleled view of the Kwai running beneath you, those things almost melt into the background. What truly lingers is the memory of the river reflecting the sky and the rusted steel arc of that bridge — and that’s something very few restaurants anywhere can offer you.
