During our own journey, the road between Hat Yai and Pak Bara was smooth and comfortable, passing through rubber plantations, small villages and stretches of countryside that many visitors never get to see. While it’s not a sightseeing route, it offers an interesting glimpse of everyday life in southern Thailand before reaching the coast.

Once at Pak Bara Pier, you’ll check in, collect your ferry sticker or boarding pass, and wait for your speedboat departure.

• Book Your Transport in Advance: During the high season (October to May), combined minivan and speedboat tickets can sell out several days in advance, especially over Christmas, New Year and Thai public holidays. We recommend booking your transport before you arrive in Hat Yai to secure your preferred departure time and avoid any unnecessary delays.

• Visit During the Dry Season: The best time to travel to Koh Lipe is between November and April, when you’ll usually enjoy sunny skies, calm seas and reliable ferry schedules. These months are also ideal for snorkelling and diving thanks to the excellent underwater visibility. While you can still visit during the rainy season (June to September), expect fewer ferry departures and the possibility of cancellations if sea conditions become too rough.

• Be Prepared for the Speedboat Ride: The speedboat journey from Pak Bara Pier takes around 90 minutes to two hours and can vary depending on the weather. During the dry season, the crossing is often smooth, but rougher seas are possible during the monsoon months. We found it useful to have easy access to: passport, water bottle, sunscreen, sunglasses, hat, phone charger or power bank, motion sickness tablets, cash for island fees and small purchases, a lightweight waterproof jacket during the rainy season.
